Mean Platelet Volume
Identified as a measurement of the average size of platelets, MPV is typically comprised in blood examinations. It is a fact that the average platelet size is larger when the body generates greater numbers of which, the results can be used to determine inferences about its production in the bone marrow
Mean platelet volume (MPV) can only be recognized by automated analyzers such as Advia. This a device that means it is in a manner analogous to that described by mean corpuscular volume (MCV) for red blood cells.
Increased mean platelet volume is expected in regenerative thrombocytopenia. It is caused by great peripheral loss and destruction of platelets which is accompanied by elevated production of platelets by meakaryocytic hyperplasia. Thrombopoiesis that is high tends to result in the release of bigger platelets, that also have developed operational skills.
Contradict to the study mentioned above, there was a clinical report that showed the frequent appearance of decreased mean platelet volume in dogs that have immune- mediated thrombocytopenia caused by platelet fragmentation, are at least foremost examples from the latest diagnosed cases.
Recent investigations in dogs showed that a high mean platelet volume is a great sign of enough response in the bone marrow. However, a lower MPV level in thrombocytopenic dogs does not detect an inadequate response in the bone marrow. In other words, animals that are thrombocytopenic, indicate a large MPV that is a having an active thrombopoiesis. Small MPV in the other hand, does not rule out an adequate calculation of megakaryocytes in the bone marrow.
Cats that are healthy generally possess variably sizes platelets, but there are some that are also large. The breeds of Cavalier King and Charles Spaniel, have huge platelets compared to the others. It may be missed out by some automatic machines like the Coulter analyzers because there are platelets that fall outside the size inception that the instrument utilizes for counting the platelets. However, with Advia analyzer, all the platelets regardless of whatever size are all included in the computation.
Aside from the significant use of MPV in animals, it is also as the same in human beings. It is actually a practical marker of inflammatory bowel disease activity. Such study was conducted by the Department of Gastroenterology from the University Hospital of Crete in Greece.
The methods they utilized were complete blood count (CBC), C- reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum thrombopoietin, erythropoietin, plasma beta- thromboglobulin and platelet factor 4. All were measured in 93 patients with ulcerative colitis, 66 patients with Crohn's sickness and 38 healthy blood donors.
Disease activity was evaluated by the Clinical Colitis Activity Index and the results showed that MPV increased in persons with active compared to inactive ulcerative colitis and with those active compared to inactive Crohn's disease.
