Many of us are familiar with DirecTV's relatively recent commercial campaign of - this might not be the exact wording, but you'll likely recognize it - things along the lines of:

Some people still like cable, just like they prefer. . .

• Pre-shaken cold drinks.


• Getting their arm trapped in a vending machine.


• Camping in poison ivy.

Most of us are likely familiar with "cord-cutting," in which cable, satellite, and other TV providers' services and expensive accompanying bills are tossed aside for online streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

What Does All Of This Mean?

I'm not here to say whether any - online streaming services, cable, or satellite - medium of television provider is better than the next. However, everyone that enjoys watching television should consider the following:

• Online streaming services typically don't offer as many live events of any kind as satellite or cable does.


• Satellite typically cuts out during harsh storms, though cable in some areas can react similarly.


• Cable is often the most reliable, and the cheapest. Big-name providers' (e.g. DirecTV, Dish) claim to fame is supreme channel packages, including regular buffets of live sports games, though only with certain (often expensive) packages.

You can decide for yourself whether cable, satellite, or digital streaming is the best option for you. However, cable is one of the most popular means of subscribing to both pre-recorded shows (think streaming services) and live events (think satellite's big, but costly, packages).

Let's look into several means of slashing cable bills - thank me later.

Act As If You're Cancelling Your Service

With the two-headed competitive threat of streaming services and satellite, cable companies are more willing than ever to slash their prices to retain customers.

Are you not happy with the price you're getting? Assuming you're a current customer, call your provider's customer service line. Ask for a lower price. Get it?

Nope? Threaten to cancel. They'll put you on hold. Now what?

You'll get something called the retention or cancellation department. Herein lies cable service for the low - get low, get low, get low.

Look Around For New Customers' Prices

Most television providers offer great deals to new customers, then increase their rates over time. Whatever price new customers get is pretty close to the lowest price you can command in renegotiating a new monthly price for your provider's services.

Know what to do?

Pretend like you're applying for new cable service with the company you're already a customer to, go through the process, and stop whenever you see how low it is. Viola!

Be Polite!

Nobody, and I mean nobody, likes dealing with a rude, sassy, smarty-pants, mean individual, especially when it's someone's job to deal with people like this all... day... long!

Be polite, yet firm. You'll get a lot farther than being unpleasant will.
