Noisy neighbors are an unfortunate reality for many people—especially people living in apartments or townhouses. If you too have noisy neighbors, but would rather avoid a confrontation over the subject, then it may be time to find ways of dealing with the problem from your end. Here are three ways to drown out noisy neighbors.
1. Bulk up the walls between you and your noisy neighbor.
Anything you put between you and a noisy neighbor will help reduce the amount of noise that travels through your walls. To limit unwanted noises, try hanging some large pictures on (or moving your bookcases to) any shared walls. If it fits within your budget, consider adding some soundproofing panels to your walls.
2. Install soundproofing curtains.
To keep unwanted sounds from entering your home through any non-shared walls, consider installing soundproofing curtains. Soundproofing curtains are thick enough to absorb many unwanted sounds but are mobile enough that they won't completely block off your view of the outside world. During quieter moments, simply open your curtains and enjoy the view.
3. Use a white noise machine.
White noise machines can help mask any remaining sounds if your previous soundproofing attempts haven't completely solved the problem. Though white noise won't eliminate unwanted sounds, it can help replace more annoying sounds with a soothing drone. If you are without a white noise machine, then the soft whirring sounds of a box fan may also be effective.
